cted as regent from 1811 to 1820 during the latterÆs insanity. He was idle, extravagant and selfish, yet he was also well-read, a generous and discerning patron of the arts and ædevilish entertainingÆ, as one contemporary avowed. There was scarcely a not
able artist or writer of his time that \b \cf4 \ATXht13211000 George IV\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 did not encourage and support. In fact the exuberant neo-classical style of architecture that developed in the early 1800s was named Regency\b \b0 after him. He was
also a considerable patron of the sciences, acting as President of the Royal Institution.
